Ghazal Music: "Irama Ghazal Johor"

Ghazal is a well-known traditional art form in the state of Johor. It was pioneered by the late Colonel Musa Yusoff, also known as Pak Lomak, who is widely regarded as the ‘Father of Johor Ghazal’. The original Ghazal ensemble consisted of seven (7) musicians playing the harmonium, sitar, violin, tabla, tambourine, and maracas, accompanied by a male and a female vocalist.

Ghazal songs are typically delivered through poetic verses or traditional Malay syair that praise the greatness of God, the beauty of nature, and the glory of historical figures and places. Rarely do the lyrics center on romantic love between individuals.

"Irama Ghazal Johor" will grace the Traditional Arts Stage (PST) with a ‘Mini Orchestra’-style performance, presented in three (3) segments: Traditional Ghazal, Contemporary Ghazal, and Diverse Ghazal Styles.
